I took an awkward path in life when I turned twenty-two. It was 1958, and I decided to try out the seamier side of life. At the time, I didn’t say to myself “I think I’ll go fuck my life up and see if I can pull myself out of it,” but I acted upon those words as if they were inscribed on my brain by some Great God the Engraver. I don’t believe in God, never did. But I do believe that the road to heaven—like the road to hell—is lined with good intentions. Certainly I was driven by something that any God-fearing person would call Evil, but I don’t believe that evil is an inherent part of the universe. Some people may become evil and stay that way always—that’s their choice. But some of us change after a while, and become natural and benign despite the wreckage of our pasts. I’d like to believe that I am one of those people.

For many years now, people have been telling me I should a write a book. And so, contained herein is a collection of some stories that would appear in such a book, if I were to write it. This isn’t meant to be a travelogue of horrors (although some of it is not pretty), nor is it meant to be a paean to living as I did (although I have few regrets, and had a lot of exciting times). It is my hope this book will entertain you, without necessarily inspiring you. If you think you would like to sink yourself into the kind of life I did for many years, I wish you the great good luck to do as little damage to yourself and to others as I did—although I readily admit I did others and myself some damage that should not have been done. And, if you do choose that path, I hope you find yourself—your true self—in the course of your journey. Because, I believe the true self is good.

The cast for the February 17th performance at The Press Room of actor/writer/poet Chuck Galle’s powerful memoir “Stories I Never Told My Daughter” is Kevin Baringer, John Herman, Chris Poublon, Dan Stowell, and Steve Johnson (pictured rehearsing with director Craig Fogg). There will also be a special appearance by Chuck Galle himself.
